Facility overview
Snowtrax is a leading Alpine Activity centre situated in Christchurch on the South Coast of England. The site was built in 1989 and offers activities which include Skiing, Snowboarding, and alpine activities such as ringos/tubing.
They offer lessons and coaching for all ages along with recreational use of the snow sports slopes. There is also a large Alpine Adventure Park on site with zip-wire, trampolines and a Pirate Ship.
Snowtrax undertook a major redevelopment of their snow sports surface as they saw a major barrier for participation across all disciplines of snow sports with their existing surface.
Challenge before Proslope
Snowtrax's existing surface was creating a clear and measurable barrier to participation. Edge control was inconsistent across the slope, the surface speed and feel wasn't inspiring confidence in learners, and the overall experience was falling short of what a modern snowsports audience expects. A transformational upgrade was needed — one that could serve every user from complete beginners to national-level competitors.
The project took place over 3 stages.
Proslope was identified as the surface closest to mimicking genuine snow conditions for both speed and edge control — and the only system capable of delivering consistently across all of Snowtrax’s slope disciplines simultaneously. The project was delivered in three stages:
- Stage 1 (2011): Full resurfacing of the 110m main slope, including a new 3m jump feature and a counter slope section to assist the return lift.
- Stage 2 (2013): Complete redesign of the intermediate ski and snowboard slope, including moving carpet lift systems for skiers, snowboarders, and ski-bob users.
- Stage 3: Full installation on the beginner area, including two further moving carpet lifts for a more accessible and enjoyable first-lesson experience.
Solution implemented
Results and outcomes
The business saw a significant step increase in participation since the first stage of the development. This increase was down to several factors:
Control
Improved edge control for all ability levels – from beginners to advanced racers.
Safer
Instance of a fall the addition of the underlay helps to absorb the impact. Their accident report rate has dropped considerably.
Faster
The multi-level bristle, not only assist with edge control but also help with speed.
Aesthetics
Looks like snow and the design of the mat has tremendous appeal to ‘give it a go’!
